What is MSK Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapists train in a wide range of medical fields, the most well-known speciality being Musculo-skeletal (MSK). At the centre of this approach is encouragement of our patients to be fully involved, to understand all aspects of the management and treatment options available throughout the recovery and treatment period.
MSK Physiotherapy treatment may include ‘hands on’ techniques, such as joint and soft tissue mobilisation, manipulation and soft tissue massage techniques; to help improve muscle, fascia and soft tissue length, to relieve pain and improve function.

Shockwave Therapy
At JK Physio I am always looking for the most effective way to help you recover from injury, become pain free and keep as active and agile as you can be.
I have now added Shockwave treatment to my ‘arsenal’ of appropriate tools to achieve this. Shockwave is a modern, evidence-based treatment, originally only available in Consultant led hospital clinics, but now due to the design of smaller, more modern machines, it is available in Physiotherapy Clinics.
The Science Behind Shockwave
Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a popular non-invasive therapeutic modality in the medical field for the treatment of numerous musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders. ESWT works by the emission of acoustic waves (shockwaves) that carry energy through tissues to a maximum depth of between 4cm and 8cm, depending on the machine. Shockwaves can generate interstitial and extracellular responses within the tissues which produce many beneficial effects such as pain relief, vascularization, protein biosynthesis, cell proliferation, neuro and chondroprotection, and destruction of calcium deposits in musculoskeletal structures. The combination of these effects can lead to tissue regeneration and significant alleviation of pain, improving functional outcomes in injured tissue. Considering these facts, ESWT can be a very useful technique for the treatment of numerous musculoskeletal injuries.
What Shockwave Can Do For You
Shockwave treatment is most effective and beneficial in the treatment of tendon and ligament injuries, especially those that have not responded to conservative measures like rest, medication and exercises.
Shockwave can give pain relief and promote healing.
There is strong evidence and clinical guidance from bodies like the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care and Excellence (NICE) for conditions such as:
Plantar Fasciitis (heel pain) This is one of the most successfully treated conditions, with studies showing significant pain relief and improved function
Achilles Tendinopathy (pain in the Achilles tendon) Shockwave therapy helps regenerate tendon cells and improves circulation in this often poorly vascularized area.
Calcific tendinopathy of the shoulder (calcium deposits in the tendon) The acoustic waves are uniquely effective at breaking down these calcium deposits, which the body then reabsorbs, restoring mobility and function.
Patellar Tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) It helps initiate a healing response in the stressed tendon tissue at the front of the knee
Lateral epicondylitis and medial epicondylitis (tennis and golfer’s elbow) This treatment is a proven option for these common, often slow-to-heal overuse injuries of the elbow tendons
Greater trochanteric pain syndrome (lateral hip pain/gluteal tendinopathy) The therapy can effectively manage pain and inflammation in the tendons around the hip bone
Bone-related conditions (stress fractures, non-union fractures) Focused shockwaves can also stimulate recovery in cases of non-union fractures, stress fractures, and certain bone stress injuries.
**Shockwave therapy works best when integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that includes an accurate diagnosis, advice and education, and a tailored exercise rehabilitation program. It is generally considered an excellent, non-invasive alternative to steroid injections or surgery for these conditions.**
What to Expect from your Therapy Session
If you think that you might benefit from shockwave treatment, you will need an appointment for a thorough physiotherapy assessment to understand the exact nature of your issue and to confirm shockwave is the appropriate treatment and how best to combine this with any necessary rehab, lifestyle or time pressures.
If you have already had investigations and been recommended shockwave as a possible treatment, you will still need the assessment appointment to allow time to get benchmarks on your symptoms before starting the treatment, and to agree a plan.
After the longer first appointment the session time will be 15-30mins depending on the issue, and on average 3-4 sessions are required.
Appointments need to be approximately 1 week apart to allow tissue recovery.
What Costs are Involved?
An initial appointment which includes treatment in £100.
Follow up appointments are £100
A package of 3 sessions is £270

- It makes hands on treatment even more effective.
Does it cost more?
There is a modest increase in your treatment costs which should be mitigated by a better patient experience and fewer treatments to achieve the same or better results.
What is the history of TECAR therapy?
1890: Discovery of the permeability of the cell membrane by a high frequency current from 100 KHz to 10 MHz by Dr Jacques Arsène d’Arsonal, a doctor, physicist and inventor.
1939: Work on diathermy for treatment using capacitive (CET) and resistive (RET) electrodes by Dr William Beaumont, an English doctor and physicist. He was the pioneer of the first pieces of Physiotherapy equipment using a frequency of approximately 500 KHz.
1950: The use of a high-frequency current in the surgical field in the form of electrosurgery/electrocautery. This led to the development of electrodes capable of being held and therefore more mobile.
1985: Development of high frequency current in the aesthetic medicine with electrode multipolar for action on the skin.
1995: In Italy scientists published the beneficial diathermic effect of TECAR – Transference of high frequency Electrical Capacitive And Resistive. They also developed procedures for its use in functional rehabilitation using non-invasive mobile electrodes.
2009: In France, protocols for the use of TECAR by Physiotherapists to stimulate healing in elite athletes were developed using the Italian research. The start of the development of the product Winback.
2013: Winback – released a new generation of high-performance equipment delivering more efficient, more dynamic mobile TECAR therapy device. Designed specifically for the needs and to complement the treatment by Physiotherapists.
2013 to present day: Winback continue to develop their high performance equipment. The 1st generation composed of a passive electrode and several types of active electrodes, offering a more efficient treatment when combined with manual therapy. Then came the use of the fixed electrode and the Flex Patch, allowing more movement during treatment so gaining the benefits of mobilisation and muscle strengthening. Now the 3rd generation enables the passage of the energy through the Physiotherapists hands whilst delivering manual techniques!
What a journey!

Clinical Acupuncture
Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic purposes, for pain relief, osteoarthritis and muscle release.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture treatment is a clinical treatment derived from ancient Chinese Medicine, based upon scientific research and clinical evidence. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites in the body for therapeutic purposes, primarily for pain relief and muscle release. It can be used in isolation or in conjunction with other treatments as part of an integrated approach to treat pain, inflammation and related conditions.
Many theories have been put forward about how acupuncture works, there is still no definitive agreement or clear scientific explanation. The body’s endogenous opioid system is thought to have a role in immediate pain-relieving; with the release of endorphins, and the limbic and autonomic nervous systems possibly explaining longer term effects. The ‘pain gate theory’ has also been thought to play a part in pain relief.
There is an increasing number of research publications both in the UK and worldwide highlighting the effectiveness of acupuncture when compared to other treatment modalities, such as opioids and exercises.
What conditions can it address?
Chronic pain (such as headaches, back pain, neck pain)
Nausea
Migraine prevention
Anxiety, Depression
Insomnia
What to expect from your acupuncture session?
Jo has gained accreditation with the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists (AACP). She follows strict guidelines to ensure your safety at all times.
You may feel a mild pin-prick on the skin, as the needle is inserted. This is not like having an injection or giving blood, as the needle is much finer.
With trigger point acupuncture, sometimes the needle elicits an aching or cramping (the twitch response), but this is usually short lived, and often followed by relief. Generally side effects are non-existent or confined to slight bruising; but may include fatigue, light headedness, bruising, localised blood-spotting, tenderness where the needles were inserted. (It is advisable to drink plenty of water to keep hydrated after receiving acupuncture.)
What does acupuncture feel like?
Many people report feeling minimal discomfort as the needles are inserted. Once the needles are in place, patients may feel a mild tingling sensation, warmth, or heaviness at the insertion points or throughout the body, which is considered a sign that the treatment is working.
How does acupuncture work & is it safe?
Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance. In contrast, Western practitioners view acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which boosts your body’s natural painkillers and increases blood flow
Acupuncture is safe when performed by a qualified and experienced practitioner. Complications are rare, but it’s important to use a licensed acupuncturist who uses sterile, single-use needles to minimise any risk of infection or injury.
How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions needed varies depending on the individual and the condition being treated. Some people experience significant relief after the first or second session, while others may require multiple sessions over weeks or months to achieve their desired outcomes. Typically, Jo will suggest a course of treatment based on an individual’s specific needs and adjust as necessary based on the patient’s response to therapy.
